The musher dogsled is the national vehicle in northern Greenland. The seemingly primitive means of transport has been developed and refined over millennia and outperforms today easily various snowmobiles and tracked vehicles. Therefore prefer, for example. prisoners dogsled when they're where they should be able to rely 100% on their vehicle.

Dogsleds in the far north is different from the south at by being longer because they can pass through cracks and fissures in the ice. The slide is also only bound and not nailed together, thereby giving it a flexibility that enables it to climb uneven terrain. A true off-road.

10-12 hp (dogs forces) is the most common "engine size", enough to shoot a considerable speed on the fast surface.

North Greenland has been the starting point for countless historic sledding trips - from Knud Rasmussen to the Danish Crown Prince. And no visitor to the north of Greenland snow should miss out on the experience of following in the sled track of celebrities at full speed across the ice by a team of baying dogs.

Already around the year 2500 BC, the first Inuit reached Greenland from the American continent. It was hunters that followed muskox tracks. This endless hunt for food was the life condition of the Inuit. If the food moved, should inuiten be ready to break up. It gave a very special culture of having to own as little as possible.

It was a harsh life, in which only the toughest survived. A life where you were at the mercy if the weather was not good. It was therefore found the Inuit a nature-needed respect for "Sila" - "up there". Inuit could never dream of violating nature because they knew that it was a danger to themselves. Inuit were ecologists 4,500 years before it became fashionable.

Today you will encounter the ancient Inuit culture throughout North Greenland. First and foremost among the hunters who still holds the old "craft" alive, but also in the general population where the hospitality, humor and respect for nature lives on. And finally at the many museums, where you can experience the tools and crafts, there is evidence of an ancient 100% organic living.

The North Greenlandic icebergs

The huge icebergs
The North Greenlandic icebergs are huge and can be up to 100 meters high - and that is just what is above sea level. It's behemoths that rise vertically out of the water in the mighty forms and shapes. But it is the graceful and stunningly beautiful when they quietly move on the surface of the sea.

The icebergs are created by inland ice that spit them out in the water with an overwhelming force. The most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere is located in Ilulissat Ice Fjord. It produces 20 million tons of ice a day - or as much water as New York uses in a whole year!

The inland ice itself covers 85% of the world's largest island. - At its highest point is over 3,000 meters thick, and is up to 100,000 years old. Drilling down into the ice cap, the talk about climate change and volcanic eruptions in the northern hemisphere. Ice Cap In other words, world history freezer, and is therefore a favorite target for researchers.

For us it is "just" a completely overwhelming experience of nature. If you stand on the ice cap, you will experience a total peace, both when you gaze out over the stunning landscape, and when you look into your soul.

The beauty is dangerous
The Greenland ice should be regarded with respect. The giant icebergs melting and can suddenly tip over. The glaciers may cause tidal waves of 10 meters when they calve. And the inland ice is covered with cracks and canyons that are visible at the edge, but often covered by a layer of snow further inland. But you bypassed the ice with caution, waiting for you nature experiences that are the most beautiful, the world has to offer. The ice is cold, but it melts hearts as easy as nothing.

If the ice cap is melting
Should the Greenland ice sheet melt, the oceans would rise by up to seven meters - huge freshwater resources are tied up in the Greenland ice sheet. The ice cap was crossed for the first time in 1888 by Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen, and today deleted many expeditions across the ice from both Kangerlussuaq in the west and Isortoq in the east. Climate:
From Kangaatsiaq in the south to Qaanaaq in the north there are more than 1,200 km, so of course there are big differences in climate. Generally it can be said that both summer and winter is the coldest in the north, and weakest in the south. During the coldest months of February and March the temperature can be minus 25 0 or more, while temperatures of plus 8-12 0 are common in summer. Because of the dry air environment feels warmer than the thermometer shows.

Dressing Clothes:
Whether it is winter, spring or summer, we recommend clothes for layer-by-layer principle, the outermost layer should be wind and waterproof. When the sea temperature in summer is only a few degrees, it is sensible to bring gloves and hat for cruises. Both winter and summer, it is important to bring the right footwear, ie waterproof shoes or hiking boots with a sturdy molded. For dogsledding it is usually possible to rent skin clothes that are really hot.
