Stege Møn

Stege is one of the old market towns in Denmark.
The town grew large with the Øresund herring fishery in the Middle Ages. Stege had so many booths at the herring market in Skanør that they formed their own "district".

The Middle Ages are most present today, for example in the town ramparts, the small crooked streets and especially "Mølleporten" which is one of the last preserved town gates from the Middle Ages. A walk along the ramparts and along the gardens, stretching all the way to Stege North, gives a beautiful impression of the town's cultural history.

Stege is, however, also modern and living with a lot of good restaurants and shops and a very active chamber of commerce, who arrange the Tuesday Markets with entertainment and special offers for the entire family, during the summer.

The harbour in Stege, which attracts a great number of yachtsmen, has been given the Blue Flag and is situated just a few steps from the town centre. Just on the other side of Storebro, is a small recreational area around the old sugar factory called "Jordbassinerne". The town museum is situated in Empiregården and Rødkilde is one of the leading theatre high schools in Denmark, educating future actors and directors.

Just recently, Stege got its own woods again. An extensive project, involving the erection of a the new woods, connects Stege, Udby and Ulvshale with a large natural area containing a variety of trees and bushes, walking and bicycling paths and activities in the nature
