Løkken town, which from the early morning to the small hours is alive with /Provence?s, is an active and nuanced shopping experience. Many of the local shops are open every day all year round, some of them until late in the evening – and there’s plenty to choose from.
From Easter to the middle of October the High Street is for pedestrians only and you'll find a range of activities for all the family.
In Løkken you’ll also find excellent sports facilities and a relaxed atmosphere with cafés, restaurants, shops, artist’s workshops and a little sweet shop where you can see boiled sweets being made the old-fashioned way. When the west wind blows you can take advantage of the many indoor activities on offer – or experience another side of the beach, you'll find there's powerkiting, surfing and windsurfing.
A visit to Løkken Museum and The Coastal Fishing Museum is an ideal way of becoming acquainted with the town’s history.
Along the streets and promenades and amongst the dunes you’ll find traces of coastal fishing all over the place.
Løkken has a wealth of experiences for all ages. During the summer months there are concerts, flea markets, antique markets, beach aerobics, competitions and guided tours of the town and dunes. On Løkken Beach you’ll still find fishing cutters being drawn up onto the beach after a trip out to sea, and if you want to you can take some of their catch home with you.
After the first houses were built in Løkken in 1678 the town grew to become the most important trading port for traffic between Vendsyssel and the south of Norway, with grain, butter and meat going one way and timber and iron the other. Warehouses from those days are still extant although the trade which gave rise to them dwindled out around 1900.
Løkken became an important centre for fishing, the third largest on the west coast. In 1950 up to 50 boats were beached on the shore when the fishermen brought their catch home. There aren’t many fishermen left today but you can still see the breakwater, signal mast, tar pit and lifeboat station, (now the coastal fishing museum).
The first holidayers started to visit towards the end of the 19th Century and Løkken became a popular resort. Løkken remains a popular holiday destination with hotels, campsites and holiday cottages.
Løkken offers one of Northern Europe's best bathing beaches. The broad, white and sandy beach is characterized by the white beach huts, which are placed along the high, sheltering dunes with lyme grass on both sides. The beach is 10 km long and completely stone free.
Here you will find more bunkers from World War II, which can provide shelter on a windy day. Motoring is allowed on the beach, but the beach also has traffic-free sections.
The westerly wind makes sure that the waves of the sea are suitable for both swimming and surfing. During the summer beach volley is arranged by the waters edge.
At all seasons the beach invites walks. The sunset over the sea can be enjoyed from the beach, the dunes or from the mole.
The nature, surrounding Løkken, varies from the wide sandy beach and the wind-swept dune landscapes of the North Sea to the fertile meadows, the moors and the forest areas behind the seaside town.
Just south of Løkken, between Saltum and Grønhøj, you can experience a hilly landscape with forest, sea and a dune plantation. From the viewpoint Guldalderhøj in this area you can enjoy the sight of the whole bay Jammerbugten.
Along the shore, especially to the north of Løkken, you can experience the high cliff Lønstrup Klit as well as the severe impact of the sand drift on the landscape, f.x. by the hill island Rubjerg Knude, where the impressive sand dune in front of the lighthouse now exceeds the height of the lighthouse.
